The Advanced Functional Materials (AFM) Laboratory, Faculty of Industrial Technology (FTI), Institut Teknologi Bandung, organized a rafting activity in Pangalengan, Bandung Regency, as part of its non-academic programs to strengthen interpersonal connections with international exchange students.
The rafting activity was held on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, approximately one week before the exchange students returned to their home country. The event was intentionally scheduled as a refreshing break following a period of intensive laboratory research, while also introducing the international participants to the natural landscape of West Java.
Since early September 2025, AFM Lab has hosted three master’s students from Kumamoto University, namely Shotaro Kubo, Yuto Ohata, and Kotaro Furuya, who joined the laboratory for approximately one month. During their stay, the students actively engaged in experimental work, research discussions, and scientific knowledge exchange with AFM Lab members.
The rafting trip was attended by both students and faculty members of AFM Lab, including Evan, Falah, Astri, Chandra, Dr. Gilang, and Dr. Wulan, together with the visiting students from Japan. This informal setting provided valuable opportunities for cross-cultural interaction and personal bonding beyond the academic environment, supporting stronger collaboration and mutual understanding.
Prior to the activity, several participants—particularly the international students—expressed initial nervousness due to the strong river currents. However, after receiving safety briefings and guidance from professional instructors, the atmosphere quickly shifted from apprehension to excitement. Throughout the rafting experience, participants displayed high enthusiasm, with laughter and encouragement accompanying the journey along the river.
The exchange students shared very positive impressions of the activity, describing it as enjoyable and exciting from start to finish. No issues were reported during the event, indicating smooth organization and effective safety management. Through activities such as this, AFM Lab aims to ensure that international students gain not only valuable research experience but also lasting memories of Indonesia’s culture, natural environment, and sense of togetherness.
AFM Lab plans to continue integrating similar social and cultural activities as part of its international exchange and collaboration programs in the future.
